This page explains how Neruda Archives prepares transcriptions, translations, metadata and historical context. It distinguishes documentary evidence from interpretation and records uncertainty rather than concealing it. The archive grows continuously, and published records may be corrected as new evidence emerges.

Sources and public copies

Sources and public copies

The physical originals are privately held. Public records are prepared from ordered scans and public access copies. Stable NRA-L identifiers and URLs connect each item, its images, metadata and machine-readable representations.

Transcription and uncertainty

Transcription and uncertainty

Transcriptions aim to preserve the wording, spelling and documentary character of the source. Unclear or damaged passages are marked as uncertain rather than silently completed. Readings are reviewed against the available images and may be revised.

Translation and AI assistance

Translation and AI assistance

English translations are working scholarly aids, not replacements for the original text. AI tools may assist with transcription, translation, description and reconciliation, but outputs are checked against the sources; unresolved uncertainty remains visible.

Metadata, names and context

Metadata, names and context

Dates, places, people, organisations and subjects are recorded from the document and supporting evidence. Documentary name forms are preserved; normalized names and external authority links are added only when identification is sufficiently supported. Historical context is distinguished from inference.

Versions, corrections and data access

Versions, corrections and data access

Neruda Archives is a continuously growing resource. Corrections are welcomed, and new evidence may update transcriptions, translations, metadata or context while the stable identifier remains unchanged. Public records are also available through Omeka S, IIIF, API and downloadable research-data exports under the stated reuse terms.
